Hugh Newton of the Meet Me There Hotel has sent me the following info:

Meet Me There is a beautiful eco-tourist African Home Lodge which is deeply involved in the life of these coastal communities. This stunning lodge provides you with cool comfortable rooms, a magnificent restaurant with a local and international menu, and lots of interesting activities and tours. There is so much to do. The healthy salt water lagoon is great for swimming and canoeing. We have a ten member cultural troupe who can teach you music and dance. Every weekend we celebrate with African bands, Reggae nights, and a late night DJ. You can join our turtle patrol and see these amazing animals laying their eggs on the shore. You can join our tour to the Keta Slave Fort, or our boat trip down the Volta river to the sea. You may wish to join us as we take part in the local cultural events, or in our voluntary projects in the community. We have en-suite double rooms with a veranda and tents under the coconut trees. All are mosquito proof. Meet Me There African Home Lodge Just Past Dzita Village Eastern Coast, Volta Region.

Lodge in Dzita

I am an independent writer who happened to land on this place whilst moving between projects in Ghana. What was meant to be just a one night stay easily transformed into several days, as I listened to fisherman’s songs, ate the fish they brought in, tracked down palm wine, and wallowed in all these tastes under the cool warmth of the stars at night. When I arrived, building work was just finished, the place was new and fresh, yet what they were suffering from was a lack of visitors coming to stay. So I said I would do what I can in this respect, and this is why I am writing to you. Please find below a description. I hope you may be able to incorporate this in your next publication, or that it will inspire you to visit the place yourself.

‘Meet Me There’ is an African Home-Lodge in Dzita, Volta Region, a couple of hours along the coast from Accra. It is unique in that it is close enough to the village to introduce you to the welcoming, smiling faces of the coastal Volta Region of Ghana, yet far enough outside the village to immerse you wholly in a world of crashing sea waves, towering coconut trees, hot sun, and cool, bright starlight. Locality is important: Nearly all the staff come from the surrounding villages, and the rooms of the Home-Lodge are built in the traditional way, with sun baked mud and straw roofs. On the inside, the rooms are fresh and cozy, with ceiling fans, white sheets and double mattresses, and decorated with African art in a way that gives the living environment an extra richness. Rooms are 20 Cedis a night, and there is also a children’s room with bunkbeds. For those independent adventurers looking to spend less, tents are provided with sheet and mattress for 5 Cedis a night, or 3 cedis if you bring your own. If you are looking to just kick back, the restaurant cooks up some delicious seafood, and the bar serves cold beers, all of which can be enjoyed by the side of the lagoon, a natural pool that glows with phosphorescence when you swim at night. For those who want to get involved with the community, there is a tailor in the village who can make batik shirts, a medicine woman who is always happy to meet strangers, and fisherman that come to the beach every morning. There are boat trips to where the river meets the sea, a leatherback turtle protection project you can get involved in, and drum and dance lessons you can take in the Ewe style. Time slips away fast in a place like this, so make sure you give yourself ample days for the food, friends, sounds, and sensations that will meet you here.
